The CMS Fund

FAQ

The Board of Directors of The CMS Fund is exploring a wide range of outreach activities that The CMS Fund might foster and support. The Board of Directors would like input and creative ideas on ways to develop The CMS Fund, so that we can pursue new opportunities to share what the music and higher education profession has to offer to the wider public. We hope that you will look over the following points and send us your responses and questions.

First of all, what is the purpose of The Fund?

The purpose of The CMS Fund complements that of The College Music Society itself. The CMS Fund seeks to support the dissemination to the public of the highest quality music and knowledge about music that the members of The College Music Society have to offer. Through the programs of the Fund, CMS members can share their creativity and expertise to enhance the quality of American life and culture by making available to the public the professional accomplishments of the music profession in higher education.

What is “the public” as far as The Fund is concerned?

For purposes of The CMS Fund, "the public" is defined as individuals or groups not normally associated with or primarily involved with music in higher education. For many years CMS has shown great interest in such constituencies as the general higher education community, the local community (schools, civic groups, community performing organizations, etc.), and state and national constituencies, including other professional organizations. As long as a program is not directed toward the benefit of those of us in the music in higher education community itself, any number of possible audiences might come to mind. Being as imaginative as possible, think of the people who would most likely appreciate your own work!

What kinds of activities could The Fund support?

In keeping with its purpose of bringing the best of the accomplishments of the members of The College Music Society to the public, projects of The Fund may include innovative teaching; concerts, especially for under-served audiences; lectures; publications; recordings; compositions; workshops; classes and "pilot projects." Projects to accomplish these things both live and electronically may be considered. We'd like to hear about your creative ideas.

Is applying for support from The Fund going to be a hassle?

The application process of The Fund will be simple and straightforward, so that creative project ideas can flourish rather than having to be constrained by any particular pre-established funding categories.

Who manages The Fund?

A goal of The Fund is to keep its management, governance structure, and expenses to a minimum so that as much of the resources as possible can be devoted to projects. The Fund is managed and governed independently of The College Music Society, although it is under its general supervision and control. The principles, policies, and projects of The Fund are consistent with those of the Society.

Where will The Fund get its resources?

Sources of funding for The Fund may include individuals such as CMS members, other professionals working in music and higher education, as well as this community's many friends; corporations from the music business and industry, and related fields; and private and family foundations. Suggestions will always be more than welcome! The CMS Fund is an excellent way for all of us to promote the enduring value of our profession through tax-deductible donations.

How can I help?

It is hoped that responses will come from a representative cross-section of the membership. We hope that you will consider these points and send us your responses and questions.
