CMS Beyond Fifty

CMS Beyond Fifty: Enhancing the Cultural Life of Our Communities

The College Music Society, established in 1958, represents nearly 10,000 college, conservatory and university musicians and scholars in all music disciplines. Its mission is to promote music teaching and learning, musical creativity and expression, research and dialogue, and diversity and interdisciplinary interaction.

The College Music Society enjoys a rich history of achievement on behalf of music in American cultural life. In celebration of its 50th anniversary, The College Music Society has launched its first fund-raising campaign: CMS Beyond Fifty. The Anniversary Campaign will enable CMS to assist the music and higher education community in addressing the ever-changing world of music over the next fifty years.

In its efforts to stimulate innovation in engagement and outreach both on and off campus, the CMS Beyond Fifty campaign will ensure that the field of music will stay on the edge of innovation by identifying and supporting those individuals with creative ideas. By enabling these individuals to share the results of their musical projects, our campuses and communities will enjoy a richer cultural life.

The College Music Society has achieved a worldwide reputation and distinction in engagement and outreach, both on and off campus. Its preeminence developed over the years through the contributions of time and energy by thousands of dedicated members and friends. The generosity of these farsighted individuals has always been the hallmark of the Society's success. Through the Anniversary Campaign, contributors can now insure that innovation and creativity will remain part of music and higher education.

CMS Beyond Fifty campaign will obtain resources necessary to support innovative approaches to engagement and outreach for both on- and off-campus as well as within the undergraduate and graduate curricula. The financial goal of the campaign is $100,000. Contributed funds will stimulate music performances and educational projects as well as research to promote growth in the cultural life of both our urban and rural communities. In a time when educational funds at the K-12 levels are experiencing severe cuts, CMS believes that now, more than ever, it is imperative that our music faculty and students reach into their communities by providing musical programs to audiences of all levels. Because of its broad mission and its inclusion of topics in all areas of music, the Society is in a unique position to fill this cultural need.

Gifts of any size may be made to the CMS Beyond Fifty campaign. Donations will be invested in both immediate and endowed funds, and various types of grant programs will be developed. The usual award will be between $250 and $1,000.

Gifts will be used where the need is greatest, supporting innovation in engagement and outreach both on and off campus. In addition, gifts may be designated for Community Engagement and Outreach efforts as well as On-Campus Music in General Studies. Some contributors have chosen to create endowments, honoring or memorializing a family member or friend. The Robby Gunstream Education in Music Award is already in place and has announced its first recipient.

CMS Beyond Fifty will enable the Society to expand its efforts in fostering effective and original approaches to curriculum, pedagogy, and audience development for the benefit of strengthening the place of music in our culture. With your help, CMS can (1) support innovation and creativity in engagement and instruction; (2) help train, support, and inspire current students and the next generation of faculty, and (3) provide for enriched cultural life on and off campus.
